Dr. Henry Heimlich Uses Heimlich Maneuver To Save Woman At 96
Dr. Henry Heimlich, the man responsible for creating the life-saving move called the “Heimlich maneuver” that has been used to save somebody who’s choking, recently used his innovation for the first time at the age of 96.
In a report by CNN, it is said that Heimlich was having a meal in a senior living community, Deupree House in Cincinnati, Ohio, when he noticed the woman sitting next to him start to choke.
Dr. Heimlich then did the move he did decades ago. First, he placed this arms around the waist of the woman just above the belly button. The doctor then quickly pressed three times upwards. The woman then coughed out the piece of the hamburger that choked her.
Patty Gill Ris, 87, was saved from the situation that could possibly lead her into sure danger. She expressed her gratitude to the doctor and his maneuver.
“Oh gosh am I lucky that I sat there. And God put me right there at that table right next to Dr. Heimlich,” Ris said as quoted in the report.
“Thank this wonderful man for saving my life,” she added.
Although Dr. Henry Heimlich already has demonstrated how to perform the said move in the past decades, this is said to be his very first to use the “Heimlich Maneuver” in real life.
“It was very gratifying. That moment was very important to me,” said Heimlich in an interview with the Guardian.
“I knew about all the lives my maneuver has saved over the years and I have demonstrated it so many times but here, for the first time, was someone sitting right next to me who was about to die,” he added.
Reports say that that the Heimlich Maneuver already saved over 50,000 lives just in the United States.
