6.5 Magnitude Quake Hits Sumatra
6.5 Magnitude Quake Hits Indonesia, in the Island of Sumatra low casualties and damage, though.
Thursday morning, people panicked and running out of their homes when the 6.5 magnitude quake struck the Island of Sumatra. Fortunately, no reports of injuries and casualties happened, according to reports.
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), reported that the quake initially had a magnitude of 6.2, located around 155 km at Padang’s south, at a depth of 40 km.
According to a witness, the quake lasted for about 30 seconds, made people panic and rushed out of their houses, going to the street or grounds.
Things returned to normal without any signs of damage or casualties.
Reports of tremors and aftershocks took in the neighboring country, Singapore.
Electricity was interrupted in few places but where back on shortly after the quake.
Officials didn’t find it mandatory to let people evacuate, and returned to their respective homes instead.
A senior official of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, Wandono, told reporters that the quake didn’t have enough potential to create a tsunami.
“So far we have not received any reports of damage,” the official said.
The mayor of Padang announced the good news that no tsunami will happen.
“People would have felt it and there may be some minor damage, but it was offshore and deep so damage would be limited,” he said.
Because of the country’s position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire’, it experiences frequent volcanic activity, that causes tectonic plate to collide.
Ade Nelvi, a resident of Padang, said: “It was strong and my house was shaking, so I ran to my kids’ bedroom to wake them up and we ran out of the house,”
