PNP Backs Martial Law In Sulu Following Blasts That Left 15 Dead

PNP BACKS MARTIAL LAW – The Philippine National Police supported the proposal to place Sulu under military law following twin blasts that left 15 killed.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, Lt. Gen. Cirlito Sobejana stated that it was “high-time” for Sulu to re-impose martial law. However, Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan had expressed his opposition against the recommendation.

Meanwhile, the PNP explained that imposing martial law would provide “flexibility in maintaining law and order in the province”. As per the article, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac said:

There will be a significant difference of course because we would be able to implement stricter peace and order measures and this is not just about quarantine measures but more on security and we would need of course the cooperation of the civilian authorities

But, Banac asserted that these were just merely proposals and recommendations. Additionally, the Brig. Gen. said it would still be the civilian authorities who would have the final say regarding the recommendations.

Still, when it comes to security concerns, Banac said that “it would be best if we bring back the imposition of martial law in that part of Western Mindanao.”

Along with this, the implementation of martial law in Sulu would also enhance the implementation of the controversial “anti-terror” law.

“We are one with AFP in implementing a lockdown in entire Jolo so even at this point we can prevent movement and assist in the investigation of the incident. We are tightening the security in and around Jolo“, said Banac.
