Imee Hopes Same-Sex Marriage In Philippines Gets Recognized Soon

IMEE MARCOS ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE – Senator Imee Marcos hopes that the pending bill aiming to allow civil union laws for same-sex couples gets recognized in the Philippines.

Recently, Pope Francis expressed his support for people who want to get a civil wedding, regardless of their sexual orientation. Following this, Imee Marcos said:

Sabi ng Santo Papa, ‘Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God.’

Imee Marcos filled the bill in July 2019. It sought to provide same-sex partners the rights and protection to “own and acquire, use, enjoy, manage, sell, dispose, or alienate properties during the period of their cohabitation”.

According to an article from GMA, Imee said that she knows many friends from the LGBT communities that are smart and hardworking and had a well-off living. However, she also noted “ang dami rin sa kanila o sa kanilang partner ang tumandang mag-isa, ‘di mabayaran ang ospital, at hanggang sa paglibing, kapos pa rin ang pamilya“.

However, Senate President Vicente Sotto III stated that Pope Francis’ stance on civil union wouldn’t affect the stance of Filipino lawmakers. Although same-sex unions are prevalent in the country, the sad reality is it is only tolerated. “It’s just tolerated but not in the legal sense. We should leave it at that”, said Sotto.
