In the midst of a search and rescue (SAR) operation in Sitio Daeng, Barangay Halog East, Tubao, La Union, a somber incident occurred on September 5, 2023. A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescuer, CG Petty Officer Third Class (PO3) Ponciano Nesperos, lost his life while battling the relentless currents of a river.
CG PO3 Nesperos was a highly skilled member of the Special Operations Group-North Western Luzon (SOG-NWLZN) within the PCG. He displayed unwavering dedication to his duties and bravery in responding to the challenges presented by SAR operations. The tragedy unfolded as they responded to a drowning incident in Sitio Daeng. Alongside their mission, inclement weather persisted, adding to the peril of their undertaking.
Upon arrival at the scene, CG PO3 Nesperos focused on securing a safety line across the powerful river current. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he lost his balance and was swept away by the raging waters. His fellow rescuers made valiant efforts to save him, but despite their determined attempts, they could not locate him alive. CG PO3 Nesperos was swiftly transported to the La Union Medical Center to receive immediate medical assistance, but tragically, he was declared “dead on arrival.” This heartbreaking news cast a profound sorrow over the entire PCG community.
The PCG promptly informed CG PO3 Nesperos’s loved ones of the tragic news and continued to coordinate to provide the necessary assistance and support during this time of mourning and grief.
The entire PCG humbly pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of CG PO3 Nesperos. Until his last moments, he prioritized his sworn duty to the nation. His dedication to service and his love for his fellow Filipinos will forever be etched in the memory of his PCG comrades and the nation.
