Brillante Mendoza to Duterte: “The Philippines must change.”
Award-winning director Brillante Mendoza urged Philippine president-elect Rodrigo Duterte to stick to his promise to “change” the country.
Brillante Mendoza is in Cannes, France for his entry, “Ma’ Rosa” in the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
The movie centers on the story of corruption in the country particularly rampant police extortion or graft. It stars with critically-acclaimed actress Jaclyn Jose as the matriarch Ma’ Rosa who struggle in keeping their heads above water.
Brillante Mendoza told Agence France-Presse via report published by ABS-CBN News that the film was inspired by a friend of him who cried foul about corrupt police officers.
“It is based on a real story that happened four years ago, and this was not the first time it has happened,” the 55-year-old renowned director said.
In a sideline interview with AFP, Brillante Mendoza told the press that the presumptive president – who won a landslide victory in the election that, “The Philippines must change.”
“I am hopeful things will change for the better. That’s my goal, that’s why I do these kinds of films,” the notable director stated. “He (Duterte) will do whatever he has to do as the new president and I will do what I do as an artist,” he added.
Brillante Mendoza also aired his side on the alleged vigilante group which is run by the upcoming president as claimed by the rights groups.
Starring Jacklyn Jose’s real-life daughter Andi Eigenmann, Mendoza hoped that the movie would have strong impact internationally and also in the country.
