Chot Reyes Criticized for Being Kakampink After Loss of Gilas Pilipinas in SEA Games
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes was criticized for being a “Kakampink” following the basketball team’s loss in the Southeast Asian Games (SEA GAMES).
Following Gilas Pilipinas’ elimination as the “king of men’s basketball” in the Southeast Asian Games, Reyes was criticized by the online community. Gilas Pilipinas was defeated by Indonesia 85-81 at the Thanh Tri District Sporting Hall in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Sunday, May 22.
This is the first time the Philippines has only won a silver medal in men’s basketball at the Southeast Asian Games since 1989. Thirdy Ravena and Troy Rosario ended with 17 and 12 points, respectively, while Gilas’ supporting cast struggled to contribute.
The loss comes as the national program struggles to recover from a dramatic shakeup that saw program director and head coach Tab Baldwin removed from his position. Even more concerning is the fact that the Philippines suffered such a crushing defeat just 14 months before hosting the 2023 Fiba World Cup alongside Japan and Indonesia.
Some internet users linked Reyes’ backing and involvement in VP Leni Robredo’s rallies to the Philippine team’s failure. The head coach was accused of being a Kakampink by the internet community, who said that the political team had brought ill luck to the basketball squad.
@ginoswifeyy: “Kakarally mo yan, Chot Reyes! Gilas Pilipinas just lost the Gold for the 31st SEA Games!”
@KUglyton: “Kakampink is attach to bad luck. We are no longer the king of basketball in Southeast Asia. FYI – Yeng Guiao is also a kakampink, he is worst than Chot Reyes.”
@mypecker009: “Chot Reyes. You will be remembered now as a stupid Coach!!! Related ka pa naman sa nag endorse sa Dilawan.”
