Defacement of Comelec Website.
Following the defacement of Comelec Website and supposed leak of data, one of the masterminds involved in the incident has been arrested, Wednesday night.
The National Bureau of Investigation already held the suspect, 23, in captive while identity has yet to be released.
According to the NBI Cybercrime Division, the suspect was arrested in the area of Sampaloc, Manila by the virtue of a search warrant.
On Thursday morning, Comelec chief Andres Bautista already met the 23-year-old suspect who revealed to have admitted the act of defacing the Comelec website.
The suspect may face charges for violating the Anti-Cybercrime Act.
The Comelec website was defaced on March 27 with its database leaking online. This sparked fears especially in the security of the automated elections system.
Bautista in a press conference said that the suspect want to secure that all security features are being imposed by the Comelec. He assured to him that all the security features in the election law will be strictly imposed.
Furthermore, the commissioner assured the public that the incident will not affect the automated nationwide elections.
He also explained that the defacement of the Comelec website only affected several features of the website such as the precinct finder adding that a different website will be used for the result and that the Comelec website will only be used for public information.
The NBI assured that the agency will push for the arrest of the remaining suspects as its umbrella is also investigating if the suspect is also involved in the defacement of the other government websites.
