The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that all Filipino seafarers will be granted free rides on the Light Rail Transit (LRT)-2 and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT)-3 on Tuesday, June 25, in honor of the Day of the Filipino Seafarer. This initiative underscores the significant contribution of seafarers to the country’s economy and global maritime industry.
In its official statement, the DOTr detailed the schedule for the free rides. For LRT-2, the complimentary service will be available during peak hours, specifically from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This timing aims to accommodate the commuting needs of seafarers traveling to and from their homes, workplaces, or other destinations within these busy periods.
For MRT-3, the DOTr has extended the free ride service for a more extended period. Seafarers can enjoy complimentary rides starting at 5 a.m. and continuing until the end of the day’s operations. This extended availability provides greater flexibility for seafarers who might have varying schedules and destinations throughout the day.
To avail themselves of the free rides, seafarers are required to present valid identification. Accepted documents include the Seafarer’s Record Book (SRB) and the Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID). Additionally, the Seafarer’s Identification Booklet (SIB) will also be accepted as valid proof of eligibility for the free rides. These identification documents ensure that the benefits are exclusively enjoyed by the intended recipients.
The DOTr’s gesture aligns with the global celebration of the International Day of the Seafarer, an annual event recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This day acknowledges the invaluable contributions of seafarers worldwide, who are essential to international trade and the global economy. The Philippine government, through the DOTr, has consistently shown support for its maritime workforce, which is renowned for its dedication, skill, and professionalism.
In addition to the free rides, the celebration of the Day of the Filipino Seafarer often includes various activities and events organized by maritime organizations and institutions. These events typically focus on the welfare, rights, and professional development of seafarers. They provide a platform for discussing critical issues affecting the maritime industry and exploring ways to enhance the lives and careers of seafarers.
By offering free rides on LRT-2 and MRT-3, the DOTr not only honors the contributions of Filipino seafarers but also raises public awareness about the vital role they play in the maritime industry. This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting and recognizing the hard work and sacrifices of seafarers, who are often away from their families for extended periods while ensuring the smooth operation of global trade.
As the nation celebrates the Day of the Filipino Seafarer, this gesture from the DOTr serves as a reminder of the enduring respect and gratitude owed to these modern-day heroes of the seas.
