High Number of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) Cases in the Country

According to the report of the Department of Health (DOH), more than 150,000 cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) have been recorded nationwide. Based on the latest Disease Surveillance Report from the DOH, there were 158,307 cases of ILI from January 1 to October 14, 2023.

This number is 46 percent higher than the 108,065 ILI cases reported during the same period last year. It indicates a significant increase in ILI cases in the country.

The top three regions with reported cases of ILI are Davao Region with 23,665, Northern Mindanao with 20,842, and Central Visayas with 20,160.

Meanwhile, the regions that reported the highest increase in cases compared to the previous year are Zamboanga Peninsula (311 percent, from 1,853 to 7,622), Central Visayas (95 percent, from 10,323 to 20,160), and National Capital Region (83 percent, from 4,914 to 8,991).

Common symptoms of ILI include fever, shivering, chills, dry cough, loss of appetite, body aches, nausea, and sneezing.

The increase in ILI cases is a significant health issue that needs attention. The DOH advises the public to get vaccinated against influenza, maintain good personal hygiene, and avoid contact with sick individuals to prevent the spread of the illness.
