Almost 60 Tons Of Imported Philippine Banana Has Been Destroyed By The Quarantine Officials In Shanghai, China
On April 15, 2016, it was reported that two batches of imported Philippine banana have been destroyed by the quarantine officials in Shanghai, China. Almost 60.34 tons of bananas has been burned after the findings that they are infected by the pineapple mealybugs.
Pineapple mealybugs or known as pink pineapple mealybugs are pests that live on plant surface which destroys the whole plant and leads to significant agricultural losses. They also caused minor problems to many other crops. These pests also have the ability to transmit viruses to the pineapples.
According to the report, this is the second time in three weeks that the Chinese officials have destroyed the Philippines banana shipments. Last March 27, on Shenzhen Port, Chinese officials have destroyed 35 tons of Philippine bananas after they undergone excessive levels of pesticide.
The banana shipments have the worth of $3,000. 3,000 boxes of banana have been exported from the Philippines to China. Every shipment, the banana was inspected in Shenzhen Yantian Port and was found out that there is excessive carbendazim in the bananas.
Carbendazim is a fungicide that was widely used to keep plants from food diseases such as cereals and fruits, like citrus, banana, strawberries, and pineapples. High doses of carbendazim can cause infertility and destruction to testicles of the animal laboratory.
What worst in this report is that the carbendazim already reached the level of 0.199mg/kg, a “maximum residue limits for pesticides in food standards” of 0.1mg/kg. And because of this, the Chinese quarantine officials ordered to burned all of the infected bananas.
