Malacañang Says There’s No Problem With Using Anti-Communist Funds To Help Rolly Victims
MALACAÑANG OKAY WITH USING ANTI-COMMUNIST FUNDS – According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the Palace doesn’t mind using funds for the anti-communist task force for Rolly response.
Following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Rolly, the strongest typhoon in 2020, several areas near Catanduanes and Bicol were severely affected. Homes were left in ruin and thousands were forced to evacuate.
Recently, some lawmakers suggested using the funds the government allocated for its anti-communist task force to help Rolly victims instead. As a response, Roque said that it would be within the mandate of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC).
He explained that the objective of the task force is to promote development in areas with prevalent insurgencies. The spokesperson added: “So I don’t think there is any inconsistency with the proposal to actually spend funds in typhoon damaged areas because it is a fact that Bicol also is a hotbed for the insurgency. So that would be within the mandate of ELCAC“
Senator Risa Hontiveros earlier gave the proposal to use part of the budget for the task force that was heavily criticized for red-tagging progressive lawmakers, activists, and critics of the administration as communists.
The Senator’s statements came after the hearing on the alleged Red-Tagging by the task force of members from the Makabayan block in the house of Representatives along with celebrities such as Angel Locsin.
