This annual event highlights the importance of June 12, which marks the day in 1898 when the Philippines declared its independence from Spanish colonial rule. The celebration is an opportunity for Filipinos to reflect on their history and the nation’s journey toward freedom and sovereignty.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially designated June 12, 2024, as a regular holiday through Proclamation No. 368, which he signed in October 2023. The proclamation ensures that Filipinos across the country can participate in the festivities and activities organized to honor the nation’s independence.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the respective management of MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 encourage the public to take advantage of the free ride offer. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on commuters, promote public transportation, and provide an incentive for people to join the Independence Day celebrations.

To manage the anticipated increase in ridership, the railway authorities will implement crowd control measures and ensure that additional staff are on hand to assist passengers. Safety and security protocols will also be enhanced to maintain a smooth and orderly flow of commuters during the free ride periods.
