The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has released its weather forecast for August 26, 2024, highlighting the ongoing influence of the Southwest Monsoon over Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The monsoon is expected to bring varying weather conditions across different parts of the country.
Typhoon Shanshan Outside PAR
As of 3:00 AM today, Typhoon Shanshan (2410), a tropical cyclone currently situated outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), was located approximately 1,490 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon (26.8°N, 134.9°E). The typhoon is moving west-northwestward at 25 kilometers per hour (km/h). Shanshan boasts maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near its center, with gusts reaching up to 170 km/h. Although the typhoon remains outside PAR, its proximity and movement warrant continuous monitoring.
Forecast Weather Conditions
Visayas, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Quezon, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the Southwest Monsoon. Residents in these areas should prepare for possible flash floods or landslides, as moderate to at times heavy rains are expected.
Metro Manila and the rest of CALABARZON and Mindanao are forecasted to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. While the weather may appear generally fair, the Southwest Monsoon could still trigger severe thunderstorms, potentially leading to flash floods or landslides in these areas.
The rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. Similar to other regions, severe thunderstorms may bring the risk of flash floods or landslides.
Forecast Wind and Coastal Water Conditions
In Northern and Central Luzon, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northwest, with coastal waters expected to be slight to moderate, with waves reaching between 0.6 to 1.5 meters.
Light to moderate winds from the southwest will prevail for the rest of the country. Coastal waters in these areas will also be slightly moderate, with waves ranging from 0.6 to 1.5 meters.
Pagasa advises the public to stay updated on the latest weather bulletins and to take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding and landslides. The agency will continue to monitor Typhoon Shanshan and the monsoon’s effects, providing timely updates as the situation develops.
