The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a significant increase in seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island, following its “explosive eruption” on the evening of Monday, June 3. In a volcano bulletin released at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, Phivolcs reported 43 volcanic earthquakes within the last 24 hours. This marks a sharp increase from the eight volcanic earthquakes recorded before the eruption.
The recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, which lasted for six minutes, produced a plume that reached a height of five kilometers above the vent. Despite this dramatic event, no further significant activity has been observed other than the increased seismic activity.
Phivolcs has raised the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano to Alert Level 2, indicating increasing unrest. The agency explained that the heightened seismic activity is due to shallow magmatic processes beneath the volcano. These processes have the potential to lead to more explosive eruptions or even hazardous magmatic eruptions in the future.
Given the current conditions, Phivolcs has strongly advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone around the volcano. This precaution is essential to minimize the risk of explosions, rockfalls, and landslides that could pose serious hazards to people in the vicinity.
Despite the increased volcanic activity, life continues as usual for farmers in Barangay Masulog, La Castellana. The community, situated near Kanlaon Volcano, remains undeterred, with farmers continuing their routine activities, such as planting sugarcane. The sight of the active volcano from their area serves as a constant reminder of the natural risks they face, yet they persist in their agricultural endeavors.
The situation at Kanlaon Volcano underscores the delicate balance between natural hazards and human activity in volcanic regions. While Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano closely, providing updates and advisories to ensure public safety, the local population demonstrates resilience and adaptability in the face of nature’s uncertainties.
The authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety protocols to mitigate the risks associated with volcanic eruptions. Residents and local governments are urged to stay informed through official channels and to follow guidelines to ensure their safety.
As the situation develops, Phivolcs will continue its vigilant monitoring of Kanlaon Volcano, ready to issue further warnings and updates as necessary to protect lives and property. The increased seismic activity serves as a reminder of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of volcanic systems and the need for ongoing vigilance in volcanic regions.
