China Hopeful Of The New Philippine Government, Wants Fresh Start
China stated that it is hoping for a fresh start in the diplomatic relations with the upcoming new Philippine Government.
Even with the unofficial tally of the votes, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte can be seen as the winner of the elections. According to reports, even the current administration and Duterte’s camp have been preparing for the transition.
In a report by Xinhuanet, it said that China is hoping for a “fresh start in the diplomatic relations with the new Philippine government.”
“China hopes the Philippines’ new government can work in the same direction with China, properly handle our differences and get bilateral ties back on track with concrete actions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said as quoted in the report.
According to Lu Kang, China had always secured great importance to maintaining relations with the Philippines.
Lu also pointed out the ties between China and the Philippines had suffered “severe difficulties” in the past years due to certain known reason. The spokesperson has been pertaining to the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
According to Lu, China promotes the “dual-track” approach proposed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This means that the directly concerned states would do the negotiations in line with the international law. But, China and other ASEAN countries would work as one to maintain the regional peace and stability.
In the report, Duterte has called for multilateral talks wherein the United States and Japan were involved together with the other rival claimants to resolve the disputes. But, the spokesperson seems not looking to this possibility.
