Hundreds of public school teachers in Marawi are still missing after they ran away when the ISIS-backed Maute Group raged war in the city.
According to an official of the Marawi City Schools Division, only 675 teachers out of 1,424 public school teachers confirmed that they are safe.
Zenaida Unte, assistant city schools superintendent, told Philstar.com and other members of the press that they are still searching for the remaining teachers who might flock at the evacuation centers in Lanao del Sur and in Iligan City in the wake of the siege.
“We don’t want to think negatively like they are in a bad situation, or were abducted, or trapped in their homes, or are being held somewhere. Hope runs high,” she said.
She also noted that there’s a possibility that the missing teachers might lost their cellular devices when they ran off amid the clash between the government troops and the extremists.
All the educational institutions in Marawi are still closed except for the division office of the Department of Education-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao which is manned by officials and rank-and-file personnel.
It was on May 23, 2017, when the ISIS-linked Maute Group attacked the city of Marawi.
The attack has resulted in deaths and wounding of soldiers, policemen, and civilians, destruction of houses, a hospital being overrun and the torching of a mosque.
The ongoing war in the city prompted President Duterte to declare martial law across the entire island of Mindanao.
