Despite the conflict between President Duterte and the Roman Catholic Church, Catholic Bishops of the Philippines Archbishop Sorcates Villegas reassured that they support Duterte.
Archbishop Villegas said that the Church will give support to the new administration and will keep an eye of his actions during his term.
Villegas also expressed hope that President Duterte would not consider the Church as an enemy on the instances when the Government and the Church could not agree on certain issues that the country is facing.
During the election period, the conflict between Duterte and the Catholic Church had been ver loud after Duterte criticized the church saying, he will expose all the alleged secrets and sins of the clergy.
As can be remembered, Duterte announced a date – that he will reveal the alleged sins, June 29, before he assumes the office as the country’s 14th president. But no revelation was made.
On the other hand, Archbishop Villegas took the opposite way, insisting on remaining silent over Duterte’s attacks against the Catholic Church.
In a statement entitled “Understanding Silence,” Villegas said, “There is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech.”
“Mine is the silence of Jesus before the arrogance of Pilate,” Villegas said, adding, “Silence indeed is the language of God and only those who speak silence will be able to grasp Him.”
