Pinoy Teen Wrestlers Make History In U.S. Competition
Two Pinoy teen wrestlers make history taking home 3 golds and 1 silver during the 19th Annual Boys and Girls Wrestling Competition in Vallejo, California on April 16.
“They are making history, trailblazing. Wrestlers from the Philippines have gone to other nations, like Korea, Europe, Bulgaria, Vietnam, but never in the US,” said Springstowne Wrestling Club coach Jason Guiducci as quoted in GMA News.
During the said competition, Anthony Arcilla Jr, 17 years old, won two gold medals in the freestyle and folkstyle wrestling categories.
The other teen named Royce Tiu got a gold and a silver during the event.
Arcilla was asked why he chose to compete, he said that “he wanted to represent the Philippines and go to the Olympics.
“Kasi ito po yung gusto kong i-represent kahit saang competition po. Gusto ko pong makarating ng Olympics po,” said Arcilla.
[Because this is what I wanted to represent in any competition. I wanted to be in the Olympics.]
Meanwhile, Tiu credited his win by using the defensive skills he applied against the heavier opponent.
Tiu said that his opponent was 50 to 60 pounds heavier than him and just used defense.
The teens’ coach, Miguel Plana explained how the two won:
“Made in the Philippines yung training nila, hindi yung dun nagte-training. From the Philippines talaga, nag-training, pumunta sa States and nag-compete. Si Anthony and Royce, almost literally wiped out their division.”
[Their training was made in the Philippines and not in the U.S. From the Philippines, trained, went to the States, and compete. Anthony and Royce almost literally wiped out their division.]
According to the report, Vallejo Times-Herald said that the Pinoy teen wrestlers were the first Filipino wrestlers to go America to compete.
Could this be the start of the rise of many Filipino wrestlers competing abroad?
