Filipino Boxer Randy Petalcorin Loses Controversial Split Decision In Australia

A Filipino boxer named Randy Petalcorin lost via a controversial split decision in a bout held in Melbourne, Australia. He fought against an Australian-based Tanzanian named Omari Kimweri for the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver flyweight title.

The bout happened at the Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington, Australia on Friday, April 15.

What made it really shocking is because the Filipino boxer knocked down his opponent four times but were not called by the referee – even a single one.

After the bout, the split decision awarded to Kimweri leaving everyone shocked.

The judges score 114-113 for the Pinoy, and the other two which is, 115-112 in favor of the Tanzanian.

After the bout, Jim Claude Manangquil and Peter Maniatis, the Filipino’s managers have sent the full video to the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman for further investigation.

The managers also expressed their disappointment with the decision.

“This is horrible for boxing. This is killing the sport that we love and also hurts the boxers who work hard,” said Manangquil as quoted in GMA News.

In the fight, the Australian referee Malcolm Bulmer seemed to be missing to call the knockdowns happening in front of him.

The WBC already stated that it will be investigating the controversial bout.

Kimweri has a record of 16 wins, 3 loses, with 6 knockouts while Petalcorin records 23 wins, 2 loses, 1 draw, including 18 KOs. In order to be allowed to fight for the WBC silver flyweight title, he had vacated the interim WBA junior flyweight title he’s holding. But, it ended in a disappointing loss.
