Filipino students from Mindanao built an electric car that is set to compete for Shell Eco-marathon 2018 which will be held in Singapore.
‘Dagitab Dragons’ is a group of engineering students from Mindanao State Uiversity- Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) who successfully built an electric car.
The said group was able to create a highly economical battery-powered car which they called ‘Tarintik’, the local term for raindrop.
It is in line with the Shell Eco-maration 2018 which will be held at Singapore Changi Exhibition Center, based on the article published in Trending News Portal.
The said competition is sponsored by Shell Oil which is intended to discover brilliant young minds that are able to design and create energy-efficient vehicles.
This is an international competition which is also held in different parts of the globe such as Finland, United Kingdom, Japan, Holland, United States of America and France.
The group of the said engineering students is set to go there this coming March. There, they will compete with other entries from other countries.
‘Tarintik’ was built with a budget of 100 thousand pesos and was made out of fiber glass and scrap metals. The electric car has a battery made of lithium iron phosphate and one of its innovative features is it can run with a speed of 40-50 kilometers per hour.

In 2015, a group of Filipino students dominated in the Urban Concept Category of the said competition and the President of Technological Institute of the Philippines Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz could not be prouder when she said that the achievement is a proof that enough value is being given to outcomes-based education model.
Another achievement for Filipino students in this field was achieved by the De La Salle University (DLSU) in 2017. They also got the award on the same category against five other countries in the Asia-Pacific.
That winning landed the DLSU students to London where they competed for the Driver’s World Championship Grand Finals, based on the article.
