Groups of suspended accounts were involved in various information campaigns. These accounts were using tactics like spreading content through fake accounts and spamming through retweets.

Twitter disclosed 271 accounts originating in UAE and Egypt, 4,248 accounts from the UAE that is directed at Qatar and Yemen, 259 accounts from Spain, a small group of six accounts that is linked to Saudi Arabia’s state-run media apparatus, 1,019 accounts from Ecuador, 200,000 fake accounts based in China that “were attempting to sow discord about the protest movement in Hong Kong”, and 4,301 accounts in PRC/Hongkong.

These accounts were suspended for violating the company’s policy on platform manipulation in which Twitter defines as “a large-scale aggressive or deceptive activity that misleads or disrupts people’s social media activity.”

Twitter will continue to refine and enhance their approach to disclosing all state-affiliated information operations on their platform. Other tech companies such as Facebook and Google also have been combating campaigns on disinformation.
