Pagasa Afternoon Weather Forecast for August 31, 2024

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has reported a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) located 610 km East Northeast of Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, or 555 km East of Guiuan, Eastern Samar (10.6°N, 130.8°E). This LPA, along with the prevailing Southwest Monsoon, is significantly affecting the weather across various regions in the Philippines, particularly the western sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Pagasa Afternoon Weather Update

Weather Conditions and Impacts

Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Northern Mindanao are expected to experience cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the influence of the LPA. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as there is a potential for flash floods and landslides triggered by moderate to heavy rainfall.

Similarly, Palawan, the rest of Visayas, and the rest of Mindanao will see cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, this time caused by the Southwest Monsoon. The threat of flash floods and landslides remains high in these regions, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.

In contrast, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. These weather patterns are due to localized thunderstorms, which, although generally less intense, can still lead to flash floods or landslides in areas affected by severe downpours.

Wind and Coastal Water Conditions

Across Luzon, light to moderate winds from the southwest to the south will prevail, resulting in slight to moderate coastal waters with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.

In Visayas and Mindanao, winds will be light to moderate, blowing from the southwest to northwest, which will also lead to slight to moderate coastal waters with similar wave heights.

Outlook and Precautions

Pagasa advises the public, especially those in areas prone to flooding and landslides, to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and to take necessary precautions. Fisherfolk and those with small sea crafts are also urged to be cautious when venturing out into the sea due to the moderate wave conditions.

The LPA’s movement and possible development will continue to be monitored, as it may influence weather patterns over the next few days. The agency emphasizes the importance of preparedness, especially with the continued influence of the Southwest Monsoon, which typically brings prolonged and heavy rainfall during this season.
