Pagasa: LPA May Turn Into Tropical Depression

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) released its latest weather forecast this afternoon, August 20, 2025, warning of a low-pressure area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that may develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

Weather Forecast

As of 2:00 PM, the weather bureau reported that the system, tagged as LPA 08e, continues to bring unstable weather conditions across parts of the country. Pagasa has classified its development potential as “medium,” indicating a significant chance of intensification into a tropical depression.

Tropical Cyclone-Like Vortex Monitored

Pagasa also confirmed that a Tropical Cyclone-Like Vortex (TCLV) is currently within its monitoring domain. For the first week of the forecast period (August 20–26, 2025), TCLV1 is expected to move toward Northern Luzon. While there is a low to moderate chance of it strengthening into a full tropical cyclone, Pagasa warned that residents should remain alert for possible heavy rains and localized flooding.

By the second week (August 27–September 2, 2025), TCLV1 is forecast to move further west, heading toward the Vietnam–Hainan area and exiting the Philippine monitoring zone. However, Pagasa noted the possibility of another weather disturbance, TCLV2, forming over the eastern section of the PAR. At this time, TCLV2 is considered less likely to intensify into a storm; however, its presence maintains the tropical cyclone threat potential elevated for the two-week outlook.

Weather Impacts

The development of LPA 08e and the presence of TCLVs may result in periods of cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Pagasa advised residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain cautious, particularly with localized downpours that may occur in the afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, calmer weather may still prevail in some parts of Mindanao and the Visayas during the day, but the overall forecast suggests unstable conditions nationwide due to the southwest monsoon and the influence of the LPA.
