PAGASA Warns of Dangerous Heat Index in Three Areas on March 19, 2025

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning that the heat index in three areas is expected to reach dangerous levels on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. According to the 5:00 p.m. update on March 18, 2025, the affected areas are Coron and Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, and Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur. The heat indices in these locations are forecasted to hit 42°C, placing them in the “danger” category.

Dangerous Heat Index Level

Understanding the Heat Index

The heat index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. PAGASA classifies a heat index between 42°C and 51°C as “dangerous,” posing a high risk of heat-related illnesses. Prolonged exposure or intense physical activity under these conditions increases the likelihood of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Health Risks of High Heat Index

Exposure to a high heat index can result in various health issues, including:

  • Heat Cramps: Painful muscle spasms caused by the loss of salt and moisture due to excessive sweating during physical exertion.
  • Heat Exhaustion: A condition marked by heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. It occurs when the body is unable to cool itself effectively.
  • Heat Stroke: The most severe heat-related condition, heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature control system fails. It can lead to confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness, requiring immediate medical intervention.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Heat-Related Illnesses

To minimize the risk of heat-related health issues, PAGASA recommends the following precautions:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even when not feeling thirsty, to maintain hydration.
  • Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures are at their peak.
  • Wear Proper Clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to improve air circulation and minimize heat absorption.
  • Use Sun Protection: Use umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, and sunscreen to protect against direct sunlight.
  • Stay Updated: Regularly monitor weather updates and heat index advisories from PAGASA and other reliable sources.

Despite the rising heat indices, PAGASA has not yet declared the start of the warm and dry season. As of March 10, 2025, weather systems such as the shear line, northeast monsoon, and easterlies are still influencing the country’s climate, resulting in fluctuating temperatures.

With heat indices expected to reach dangerous levels in Coron, Puerto Princesa City, and Zamboanga City, PAGASA’s warning highlights the need for public vigilance. By following safety measures and staying informed, individuals can effectively protect themselves from the adverse effects of extreme
