The12th President Fidel Ramos Laid to Rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani
President Fidel Ramos the republic’s 12th president, is taken to his final burial place in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) in Taguig City, Yesterday, August 9.
The former President died at the age of 94. Fidel’s wife, former first lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos, and their daughters and grandkids carried him to his final burial place.
The President was put to rest at the LNMB section reserved for late presidents. He was positioned next to late President Elpidio Quirino.
Based on the report of Rappler, Fidel Ramos as former president and commander in chief, was granted a two-part state funeral. His ashes were taken from Heritage Park, where he had been laid to rest for nearly a week, early in the morning.
After Ramos’s remains were transported to the foyer of Heritage Park, military honors began. Following this, there was a mournful procession to the LNMB.
The late commander in chief was given full military honors in front of the Heroes’ Memorial Gate at the Libingan. Following the initial rites, there was a funeral procession to Ramo’s tomb.
The report said that the funeral was attended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who stood behind Mrs. Ramos during the final rites. As part of Ramo’s final farewell, his favorite songs, including “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” were performed. President Marcos, as commander in chief, handed over the Philippine flag to Mrs. Ramos.
At the funeral, the late president’s loved ones and others presented him with flowers. The Ramos grandchildren placed the final floral wreath on their grandfather’s tomb together.
Mrs. Ramos spoke briefly after the inurnment, recalling how difficult it was for her husband to raise a family as military man, but they overcame the obstacles.
Former President Fidel V. Ramos was a military commander before joining politics, serving as chief of the Philippine Constabulary and later as vice chief of staff of the AFP. He was one of the military leaders who enforced Martial Law under late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, which targeted government dissidents at the time.
The late president, who was also the late dictator’s second cousin, eventually lost his allegiance to his commander in chief. This eventually led to the peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986, which brought the Marcos government to an end.
Ramos was later chosen as the late president Corazon Aquino’s chief of staff, and then as defense chief. He won the presidential election in 1992 and succeeded Aquino.
