The Most Famous King of England, Henry VIII and His Famous Yet Unheard Story
You should have heard of the famous King Henry VIII of England, who had six wives, former defender of the Catholic faith and eventually the one who turned his back to the Church after marrying Anne Boleyn.
- Catholicism was flourishing during his time, when Martin Luther bagged 95 theses and decided to turn his back in the Church
- In 1521, he was awarded by Pope Leo X the title “Defender of the Faith”, opposing the reformed ideas of Martin Luther.
- He had his first mistress, Mary Boleyn, for only a short period of time and came Anne Boleyn, sister of Mary, and the first mistress he married.
- He soon after broke with Rome in 1530 and established himself as the head of the Church of England, though many were against it, some rebelled members of the Church tolerated him.
- He had his only child with his wife then, Catherine of Aragon, named Mary – who happens to be the first reigning Queen of England, Mary I, at the time when Anglicanism was already active.
- Mary I was considered a bastard or illegitimate child of Henry when she was still young, who led her to hate all those who turned their backs into Catholicism.
- King Henry VIII was considered my many historians to have had the highest number of people executed during his reign
- It was Margaret de la Pole, Countess of Salisbury, the oldest person whom he executed at age 67. She was like the second mother of his daughter, Mary, whom the King banned to keep in touch with her during her trials.
- Shortly after Anne Boleyn’s reign as the first Anglican Queen of England, she was later executed because of adultery and incest. They also had one daughter, Elizabeth.
- Henry married Jane Seymour ten days later Anne was executed, gave birth to his only son, Prince Edward, the future Edward VI.
- Though Henry had six wives throughout his life, he still continued to have some unknown affairs with other younger ladies.
- His last wife was Catherine Parr until his death, at the age of 55.
