Businessman Atong Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto are now officially considered suspects in the ongoing investigation into the case of the 34 missing cockfighting enthusiasts, also known as “sabungeros,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Thursday.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla made the confirmation during a press briefing, where he disclosed that both Ang and Barretto were named in the testimonies and reports received by authorities. “They were mentioned by name, so we have to include them as suspects,” Remulla explained.
When pressed about the timeline for filing charges, Remulla said the process is actively moving forward. “Sooner than later, it will happen,” he stated, referring to the possibility of formal charges being filed against the two prominent personalities.
The justice secretary noted that while a case buildup is ongoing, the process is not without complications. “There is money involved, and there are connections,” Remulla said, acknowledging the influence and high-profile nature of the people potentially involved. He added that prosecutors are still evaluating the available information to determine the most appropriate charges.
Remulla emphasized that not all details have been fully verified and that validation of key pieces of evidence is still ongoing. “We have to be sure before we proceed,” he said.
He also revealed the existence of an “alpha list” that includes 20 individuals believed to be part of the core group responsible for the disappearances. “These are the people we believe run the show,” Remulla said, noting that investigators are focused on building a strong and conclusive case.
The case of the missing sabungeros has gained widespread attention and public outcry since their disappearance in 2021. Families of the victims continue to seek justice, urging the government to take firm action against those behind the mysterious disappearances.
Atong Ang and Gretchen Barretto have yet to issue official statements in response to the DOJ’s announcement. However, their inclusion in the list of suspects is expected to intensify public and media scrutiny.
