Health Secretary Duque Clarifies Rumored Lockdown After Elections
Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III clarified the rumored implementation of lockdown after elections on May 9.
Duque stated in a radio interview on Saturday that they have not seen any significant that it will be possible to implement after the election. Online rumors are spreading that a new lockdown is being instituted in the country owing to an upsurge in new COVID 19 cases.
“So far, there is no indication that there will be a lockdown after the election,” Duque said in a radio interview on Saturday.
Even if tightening is required, he claims that the government can only adopt granular lockdown rather than full lockdown as previously. He stated that the country is no longer under lockdown.
“If there is any, it will be a granular lockdown. We are done with widespread lockdowns, ”he added.
Meanwhile, at the “Laging Handa” conference on Saturday, National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) chairperson and Health Undersecretary Dr. Myrna Cabotaje agreed with Duque’s statement.
According to Cabotaje, the increase in cases is not yet ‘significant’. However, he stressed that the people should still not be negligent and instead continue to be vigilant.
“The increases in cases are not significant, although we should not be putting our guards down,” he said.
The Department of Health has previously warned that if people ignore and do not follow the necessary minimum public health standards (MPHS) against COVID-19, the country could face another outbreak in mid-May. People have been flocking to show support for their political candidates since the beginning of the campaign season.
