Gigmoto, Catanduanes — The aftermath of Super Typhoon Pepito (local name: #PepitoPH) has left the town of Gigmoto in shambles. Powerful winds and torrential rains battered the area, resulting in extensive destruction of properties and infrastructure.
Photos captured on November 17 by resident John Emmanuel Tayo revealed the grim reality faced by the community. Entire homes were reduced to rubble, with others partially damaged and barely standing. Vehicles were overturned, bearing the brunt of the typhoon’s unforgiving force.
“Most of the houses are either totally or partially damaged,” Tayo wrote in the caption accompanying his photos, which have since circulated widely on social media.
Beyond the structural damage, the storm has compounded the residents’ struggles by cutting off access to safe drinking water. The community’s primary water source—deep wells—has been compromised by seawater intrusion, rendering the water unsafe for consumption. “Currently, the entire community has no access to clean drinking water as the deep wells, their main source of water, are affected by saltwater contamination,” Tayo added.
Emergency response teams and local government units are working tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate relief. However, logistical challenges due to blocked roads and communication disruptions are slowing down rescue and recovery operations.
Residents have appealed for urgent assistance, including the provision of clean drinking water, food supplies, and materials for rebuilding their homes. Non-governmental organizations and private citizens have also started mobilizing relief efforts, with donation drives underway to support those affected.
