Myanmar Was Hit By A Strong Earthquake of Magnitude 6.9
Myanmar was struck by a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.9 Wednesday night, also affecting in some parts of India and Bangladesh.
Good thing there were no casualties or immediate reports of major damage in Myanmar, an official said.
The earthquake managed to hit at a depth of 135 kilometer (84 miles), 396 kilometer (246 miles) north of Naypyidaw, capital of Myanmar.
It’s main city Yangon were greatly affected that residents panicked seeing the streets broken.
The quake centered in the jungle and hills which are 220 kilometers northwest of Mandalay, the second biggest city.
Will Frient, director of the Relief and Resettlement Department said there no reports of serious injuries to the people although nine pagodas were slightly damaged.
He also said that there are still no reports of d3aths.
Ko Hein Linn Htet, a hotel receptionist said there was no serious damage in the city, only having some cracks along the walls and in some buildings.
Tremors were felt in the states of Assam and West Bengal, eastern part of India.
During the earthquake, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on a visit and touring Assam’s National Park, Kaziranga. They were reportedly safe according to the British High Commission.
Wiiliam and Cate are scheduled to travel to Bhutan this Thursday.
People also felt thequake in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh.
Some tourists left their hotel rooms and went outside when they felt the tremor. However, they saw no sign of damage to the buildings.
A resident of Nepal, Dinesh Rai said “We felt the quake. But it was not so strong enough to force us to leave our homes.”
Last March 2011, at least 74 people were k!lled in an earthquake in Myanmar, near Thailand and Laos.
The area is said to be prone to earthquakes despite having a populated area where majority of the houses are low-rise structures.
