According to a global survey conducted just recently which was published in The Lancet medical journal, one out of eight adults are now obese.
The data showed that out of roughly five billion adults, 641 million in total were obese and it is estimated that the number of obese adult will extend up to 1.1 billion in nine years. The ratio has doubled since 1975 and it will swell to one out of five by 2025.
“There will be health consequences of magnitudes that we do not know,” Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London said during a press interview with AFP.
The global survey which was published on the renowned medical journal is claimed to be the most comprehensive up to date.
One can be considered healthy or unhealthy based upon his/her Body Mass Index or BMI. A healthy ratio of weight-to-height ranges only from 18.5 to 24.9.
25 up can be classified as overweight while 30 is obese. On the other hand, an individual having 35 and 40 BMI can be considered as severely obese and morbidly respectively.
The survey also states that obesity tripled from 3.2 percent of the population in 1975 to 10.8 percent in 2014 (some 266 million) among men and 6.4 percent to 14.9 percent (375 million) to women.
“If the rate of obesity continues at this pace, by 2025 roughly a fifth of men (18 percent) and women (21 percent) will be obese,” The Lancet quoted in a statement.
