These are the right steps to stop a nosebleed
Nosebleed or the bleeding of the nose is commonly caused by dry air or nose picking and here are the right ways to stop this.
However, based on the article Reader’s Digest, the bleeding of the nose may come allergies or the common cold to chronic congestion or a sinus infection.
Most of people pinch the bridge of their nose and lean back to stop a nosebleed but this is incorrect, according to Jason M. Abramowitz, MD, of ENT and Allergy Associates.
The right way to stop the blood to keep on dripping is to pinch the nostrils tight and to lean forward so the blood doesn’t drip back and into your windpipe.
Pinching the nostrils can put “pressure on the front of the septum where the bleed is likely coming from.”
An icepack can also help, put it on the bridge of your nose. Meanwhile, you can also use a nasal decongestant spray. It will constrict blood vessels and stop bleeding.
Another method is using cotton balls.
“The best way is to put a cotton ball inside the nose and press the areas of the nose that flair in and out when you breathe,” Maseih Moghaddassi, MD, an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist, and the Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at NYU Winthrop Hospital suggested.
He also said that most of the people do this method incorrectly because they press the nasal bone and not the soft part of the nose.
The doctor added that putting cotton or tissue into your nose could just aggravate the problem.
When the bleeding persist after trying to stop it for two or three times, that is the time to call the doctor. This situation calls a doctor’s expertise, especially when the blood has a bright red color and it is flowing quickly.
People with a recurring nosebleed should seek medical attention, as they might be warning signs of other serious conditions, according to Dr. Moghaddassi.
