To fight waste, Lamitan City in Basilan has turned discarded plastic bottles into flowers. This field filled a garden of thousands of colorful tulips, capturing tourists’ attention and building awareness about recycling.
The tulip garden was built from 26,877 bottles that were collected from 45 villages around Lamitan City in Basilan and opened to public last Monday, September 23.
Plastic bottles were cut into shapes of tulips and painted it with various colors like red, yellow, pink and blue. Other plastic bottles were blended into sand and cement and used to make pathways in the garden.
The Philippines is a major source of ocean plastics and only a small amount of its waste is recycled. This garden is an output of how recycling helps to fight waste like plastics.
Plastic bottles make up a large chunk of waste in Lamitan, and the local government turned these plastic bottles into a tourist attraction can help combat plastic pollution, according to Rose Furigay, mayor of Lamitan City.
“Let us be mindful of how to minimize the use of plastic,” Furigay said.
Basilan is among the country’s poorest provinces as well as a notorious place for being a stronghold of an Islamist group known for banditry and kidnapping. Yet by seeing this masterpiece, people will change their views on how beautiful the place is.
This garden could be one of the “Instagrammable Places” that photographers, videographers, and social media influencers looking forward to.
