Gabriela Slammed the “Distasteful Kissing Gimmick” of Herbert Bautista at UniTeam Rally
Women’s rights advocate Gabriela slammed the UniTeam Senatorial bet, Herbert Bautista, over a “distasteful kissing gimmick” in a rally.
Arlene Brosas, the House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Representative, accused Bistek of kissing a female fan at a campaign gathering. According to Brosas, Bautista asked a female supporter whether he may kiss her in the Tiktok video.
According to the video, Brosas said the woman is clearly uncomfortable being pressed because of the crowd’s yelling. Brosas called Bautista’s action a “macho power play” intended to boost the UniTeam campaign rally.
“This is not about the female supporter agreeing to be kissed. This is about Bautista using the female supporter for his macho power play in a vain attempt to boost the UniTeam campaign rally. Cheap degrading theatrics can’t make up for the lack of meaningful platforms for the people,” Brosas said in a statement.
Brosas has requested that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) publish more guidelines. Brosas argued that the Magna Carta of Women and the Safe Spaces Act should be used to prevent and penalize objectification, harassment, and other degrading views of women.
“Lagi naming sinasabi na hindi dapat gawing kasangkapan ang kababaihan para aliwin ang madla sa elektoral na kampanya. Such acts degrade and insult the capacities of Filipino women, and normalizes sexual harassment guised as crowd’s merriment,” Brosas said.
Brosas believes it is past time for the Comelec to act against this violation. If elected, Brosas promised to draft a bill prohibiting behaviors at campaign rallies that denigrate women’s views.
