US, China To Work With Duterte

US, China – 2 giant countries signaled last Tuesday that they are now prepared to work with the newly elected president of the Republic of the Philippines, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte, despite all the allegations of human rights misdeeds in the city he has done for over two decades during his regime.

An Asia Analysts said, Washington’s attitude reflects the reality that the United States national security interests will prevail human rights concerns given China’s progressively insistent character in the region and the maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said when asked about the election, “Washington respects the choice of the Philippine people. We gladly work with the leaders they’ve selected.”

Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, an accredited watchdog of Commission on Election showed that Davao City Mayor Duterte had a huge lead over two closest rivals, who both conceded defeat.

On the other hand, China, said it hope to work with Philippines’ new set of leaders to resolve the timely issue of territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

China Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a news that they are very hopeful for the Philippines saying that the country will meet China in halfway, “taking concrete measures to properly deal with the disputes so as to put the ties between the two countries back on the track of sound development.”

Lu Kang said that the two countries have been majorly hit setbacks in the recent years because of the reasons are known to all despite the traditional friendship between the two countries and their bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, US spokeswoman repeated her statement that the state respects the Philippine poll saying, “We look forward to working with the leader that the Philippines has elected.”

  1. China and other int’l communities should recognize first the Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone as mandated by UNCLOS. additionally, they should also recognize and abide the Land and Maritime Laws of the Republic of the Philippines, before any security or economics dialogue begin.
