Sleep talking is one of the sleep disorders that is defined as talking while sleeping even without being aware of it. This could be rare for some people.

Sleep talkers may speak differently from their wakeful speech in terms of their voices and the type of language they use. What could be its causes, symptoms, and treatment?

Causes

Sleep talking may happen caused by stress, lack of sleep, drowsiness, fever, or even depression. This may often occur simultaneously with other sleep disorders like sleep apnea, nightmares, REM sleep behavior disorder, and confusional arousals.

Symptoms

This may occur at any stage of sleep. Its symptoms may vary depending on its severity and duration. Severity Criteria include mild (occur less than weekly), moderate (occurs more than once per week but less than nightly and cause mild disturbance to a bed partner), and severe (occurs nightly and may cause pronounced interruption of a bed partner’s sleep); while the Duration Criteria include acute (one month or shorter), subacute (more than 1 month but less than 1 year), and chronic (1 year or longer).

You may also look for other symptoms of sleep talking such as sleep terrors, sleepwalking, confusional arousals, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, REM sleep behavior disorder, psychiatric disorders, and nocturnal seizures.
