Kilig And Teleserye: New Oxford English Dictionary Words
Kilig and Teleserye – Can you name a few of your favorite Teleserye that made you Kilig? For sure, one of those is “Forevermore” and “On the Wings of Love”. And yes, you’re right, the Filipino word “kilig” has no direct English translation word and this feeling is exclusive to us Filipinos.
Kilig can me use in English phrases “butterfly in the stomach” but nothing can express it better than the word “Kilig”.
Kilig and Teleserye made it to the Oxford English Dictionary’s new 500 words list for March 2016. It only means that English language is like all languages because it continuously evolves. Oxford English Dictionary updates its list only four times a year; March, June, September, and December.
This only goes to show that UK and US and some foreign words are widely used side-by-side with the English language as an international medium.
According to Oxford, Kilig can be used as an adjective, means “a person exhilarated by an exciting or romantic experience; thrilled, elated, gratified and/or causing or expressing a rush of excitement or exhilaration; thrilling, enthralling, captivating”.
As a noun, it means “exhilaration or elation caused by an excitement or romantic experience; an instance of this, a thrill”.
Teleserye is defined as a television soap opera.
OED also includes phrases that can be used with the word, such as “Kilig to the bones,” “Kilig Factor,” and Kilig Moment.”
According to an article published by Inquirer.net, the Filipino word “sayang” and “gigil” must be included also. “Sayang” which means, an expression of regret or loss of opportunity, and “Gigil” as an irresistible urge or emotion.
