Opinion: Teddy Locsin Jr. to Pres. Duterte
Teddy Locsin Jr. recently expressed his opinion regarding the sought ‘meaningful inaugural speech’ of the new President Rodrigo Duterte, saying that “He and his government needs to change, not the people.”
In the video by ANC during the program The World Tonight, Teddy Locsin Jr. reread the inaugural speech of the President Duterte.
“Real change, that is the direction of our way of governance. Far from being mere slogans, these were battle cries articulated by me in behalf of people hungry for genuine and meaningful change. But change, if it is to be permanent and significant, must start with us and in us. To borrow the language of F. Sionil Jose, we have become our own worst enemies. And we must have the courage and the will to change ourselves.”
Locsin then expressed his opinion regarding the speech saying that it was a ‘distaste’. According to him, Duterte must change the ‘lousy government’ not the people to themselves.

He also pointed out that Filipinos have already suffered from ‘bad presidents’ that’s why the President-elect and his people were the ones who need to change instead.
“Love of country, subordination of personal interest to the common good, concern and care for the helpless and the impoverished – these are among the lost and faded values that we seek to recover and revitalize, as we commence our journey towards a better Philippines.”
Locsin explained that Duterte might be talking about the ‘old values’ that were lost from factors like disappointments, frustrations in the past administrations, thievery, and more.
Part of the speech of Duterte quoted some words from Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the Great Depression saying, ‘The test of government is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; / it is whether we provide for those who have little.’ Duterte explained that this would be the foundation of the administration he’s building.
Locsin ended saying that people need to take the President’s words as it may be the “blueprint of dreams to be achieved or once again lost.”

I think the comment of Mr. Locsin is true that the government of Pres. Duterte should be the one to change not the people. They have seen the mistakes of the past administration and from this a change is needed in order to achieve a better government for the Filipinos.
